The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
